Local Parents Prepare to Guide Good Choices

Sixteen local parents are meeting every Thursday night to talk about the challenges of having teenagers in today’s society, share tips, and learn some new skills that will benefit their family.  The workshop series is called Guiding Good Choices, and is hosted by Five Town Communities That Care.  Research has shown that children whose parents have participated in this nationally acclaimed program have fewer depressive symptoms, lower rates of substance use, and are less likely to engage in self-harming behaviors.  Past participants and their children report that the program has improved the quality of the parent-child relationship, even for those who did not characterize their relationship as "bad" to begin with.

Guiding Good Choices is offered to parents of children who live or attend school in the five towns of Appleton, Camden, Hope, Lincolnville, and Rockport at no charge to participants.  A meal for the entire family and complementary on-site childcare makes it easier for busy parents to attend.  The current cycle, faciliated by Adam Kohlstrom and Sheryl Whitier, takes place at Camden Hills Regional High School and is supported by donations from local citizens and past participants.  To learn more about the program, about upcoming cycles, or to make a donation to support the program, call Dalene Dutton at 236-9800 or email dalene@fivetownctc.org.
