Award-Winning STAR Program Begins Again Jan. 11th!
Registration packets are once again on their way to households all across the five town community! Local middle-school students (grades 5-8) will be able to choose from a variety of skill instruction programs, including the Farm Hands at Aldermere Farm, Cooking at Farmer’s Fare, Yoga at the Open Door Yoga Center, Fit and Fun at the PenBay YMCA, Jewelry Making with SpirtHorseDesigns at CHRHS, Korfball at RES, “All A Board” at CHRHS, Swimming at the PenBay YMCA, Knit Wits at CHRHS, Martial Arts at Midcoast Martial Arts in the Midcoast Recreation Center, and Snow Showing at MerrySpring Nature Park. Long-time STAR partner the Teen Center is also back for the new cycle.
The PenBay YMCA is certainly not new to STAR, but the “Fit and Fun” class offered at the Rockport facility IS new. It includes traditional fitness activities as well as Wii Fit and healthy snack design and construction. Fitness Diva Sanda Bodamer will lead this exciting new class.
Janine Colcord of SpiritHorseDesigns will lead a new jewelry-making class. Janine brings a wealth of experience in working with semi-precious stones, silver and hammered copper—and experience working with young people! This should be a great addition to the STAR family of offerings!
Ingrid Perry has decided to jump from a support staff position to that of instructor this cycle, adding a class that will teach young people traditional board games like backgammon and parcheesi. Once students have mastered these past-times, they will take their luck on the road to challenge area senior citizens for fun and fellowship in our “All A Board” class.
STAR has offered Cooking classes in the past, but this cycle brings a new partner and focus. Farmer’s Fare will host this cycle’s offering and will help students understand the path that food takes from farm to table.
This will be the 18th cycle of STAR offered to students in the Five Town community. Five Town Communities That Care and its STAR Program staff is dedicated to continue the excellent tradition of high-quality programming that local parents and students have come to expect. The program has received two more awards this school year; the first was from the Maine After-School Network (Exemplary After-School Program, honorable mention) and the second was from the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce (Excellence in Education award).
