No Place for kids…

The US rates of juvenile incarceration far exceed those of South Africa, England, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, and many others. This is in spite of all of the research that indicates that for MOST juvenile offenders, incarceration does not have a positive effect.  The case against incarceration has been summarized by the Annie E. Exciting Panel for March Coalition Meeting!

We are very excited to share the details of the upcoming Coalition Network Meeting with you! Scheduled for March 8, 2012 from 11:30AM to 1:00PM at the John Street Methodist Church in Camden, this meeting will feature a distinguished panel of experts in Juvenile Justice.

Presenters include:

*Chief Ron Young, Lincolnville Police Department

*Roy Curtis, Community Corrections Officer

*Lindsay Jones, Maine Assistant District Attorney

*Edwin Chester, Esq., Juvenile Defense Attorney

*Staff member from one of Maine’s Juvenile Detention Centers

This panel will provide their perspectives on the challenges facing the young people from our community that they come in contact with, and ideas for ways our community can either mitigate or prevent the problems from occurring. Time for a question and answer session will be included.

Law enforcement, especially those working with our youth, are important sector of the local community and our work here. This is an outstanding opportunity for us to get a glimpse into the work they do, and the real challenges facing our kids.

Binge Drinking: Not just having a good time

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released a fascinating report on binge drinking in the United States. We been concerned about the increase in this behavior amongst our local youth, but it appears that drinking to excess is a problem that affects many Americans of all ages.

The data reveals that one in six American adults binge drink, and that they do so about 4 times a month (weekends, perhaps?).  Rates in Maine are on the high end of the national range, where between 18% and 26% of adults binge drink.  The number of drinks Maine binge drinkers consume is also on the higher end of the range…7.8 to 9 drinks per episode.
